Know What the Bible Says!

If you do not know what the Bible says, how will you ever know if someone is misquoting or mishandling it?  Why should we be concerned about this matter?  Do we not have pastors, theologians, and teachers to help us out here?  Sadly, those people have often been the ones misquoting and mishandling the Word of God!  They are, however, fulfilling what Jesus, and then the apostles, warned us about:

“And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘See to it that no one misleads you.For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many.'(Matt. 24:4-5)

“I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.”(Acts 20:29-30)

“Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.”(Rom. 16:17-18)

There are many, many more warnings in Scripture about those who would come from within the “church” and deceive those not careful about keeping the Word of God foremost in their thoughts.  You will not be deceived with flattering words if you know Scripture.  May we not be listed among the “unsuspecting” and so be led astray from the Truth ( for God’s Word is Truth – John 17:17)!

I beg you, therefore, take the time to know the whole counsel of God’s Word for yourself.  Make the study of His Word one of your top priorities.  Ask yourself if it is important enough, and hopefully it is, to you to know what the Bible says from start to finish.  Please do not depend on anyone else to tell you what is says.  Find out for yourself!  If you  are not sure where to start, I suggest starting with learning the inductive method of study (you will never study anything the same way after you learn this method).   Precept Ministries (www.precept.org) has tons of free helps for you and a blog to follow for help, too.  Basically they teach you how to slow down and really observe the text of Scripture to see what it says first, before trying to interpret it, because without thorough observation, accurate interpretation is impossible, and without accurate interpretation, how can we correctly apply God’s Word to our lives and help others do the same? As Paul said to Timothy,

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15)

Let us be people who accurately handle God’s Word so we will not be numbered with those who will be deceived, especially as we are living in the Last Days when many will go astray and have their ears tickled by false doctrines!  Listen to your pastors and teachers, but also always verify what they say with what the Scripture says.  Let Scripture be your plumbline, not a person, or a church, or a book, or any other form of teachings.  Then you will be guarded from being led astray.
